geoland Forum_5 brings together stakeholders from across Europe
The 5th geoland Forum, jointly organised by geoland2 and the European Environment Agency (EEA) was held in Berlin, Germany, between 12th and 14th May 2009. The forum brought together over 170 representatives of user organisations, service providers and research institutions from 27 countries across Europe and Africa and provided an excellent opportunity for the exchange of experiences and knowledge within the GMES Land community. A keynote speech was given by Ms. Katherina Reiche, vice-chairman of the CDU / CSU Parliamentary Group with focus on Environment & Research Policies. In her speech, Ms Reiche recognised the significant contributions made by the GMES initiative for the stimulation of technological development and the strengthening of the competitiveness of European geo-information providers. Download her speech here. Over the course of the 3 days the status and progress of various projects were presented and an outlook was given on upcoming steps of the projects. In round table discussions and workshops visions for the future development of the GMES services were further developed and debated. FP7 Space Information Day Central Europe
The Information Day will outline the most recent development in GMES and space technology and aims to facilitate the establishment of working contacts between researchers and entrepreneurs from Central and Eastern European countries and Western Europe, thus strengthening European space cooperation.

3rd GOFC-GOLD Symposiumon Forest and Land Cover Observations, Jena, Germany
The 3rd symposium is driven by the recent GOFC-GOLD activities and is a continuation of international meetings of the GOFC-GOLD land cover project office at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2004 and 2006.

GLOBCOVER Project Result
The POSTEL Service Centre makes available the first global land cover map at 300m resolution. It discriminates the continental ecosystems in 22 classes validated by independent experts.
The land cover map can be viewed with a zooming capacity and downloaded through the POSTEL seb site at the address http://postel.mediasfrance.org/. A Product Description Manual (DPM) is enclosed. The associated validation report is under finalisation and should be available at the same address after the 15th of October.
The map is generated in the framework of the GLOBCOVER project, an ESA funded initiative, using the data acquired between December 2004 and June 2006 by the MERIS sensor on-board the ENVISAT satellite.

Forum GMES 2008
Together take better care of the planet Website: www.forumgmes2008.eu The GMES Forum 2008, entitled “Together, take better care of the Planet”, organised by the European Commission and the current French Presidency of the European Union, took place in Lille on September 16th and 17th. During his opening speech EU Vice-President Mr. Verheugen announced the new name of the GMES programme: Kopernikus. He also firmly announced the implementation of operational budgets for Kopernikus by the next year and for the next financial period (from 2013). The forum featured a series of speeches and presentations on the benefits and the political future of GMES as well as on the new challenges introduced by climate change. In addition, an accompanying exhibition gave a comprehensive overview on the existing service portfolios for the individual thematic areas of GMES: Land, Emergency, Marine, Atmosphere, Security and Climate. geoland Forum IV
The Fourth and final geoland Forum and OpenDay took place on February 7-9 in Berlin, Germany, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Affairs (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung) in their very attractive Erich-Klausner-Saal. Participants from the geoland consortium, numerous related parallel (GMES) projects and various additional stakeholder organizations appreciated three days of interesting presentations of geoland results, outlooks, and fruitful discussions of future challenges and opportunities. Brussels, October 11th.
Raimer Böge, Member of the European Parliament, has been selected by his fellow parlamentarians and NGOs to win the Parliament Award for „Environment“ for his achievement of additional 100 M€ for Nature 2000 projects within the LIFE+ programme. geoland has been sponsoring this award, as LIFE+, Interreg4 and similar operational programmes are seen as key potential co-funding sources for the implementation of GMES applications by Europe’s regions. Further discussion with MEP and DG members are planned to raise the awareness for the successful Land Monitoring Applications and the need for a transition from “research and development” into operational programmes.
