Generic Landcover

Reliable multi-purpose Land Cover data is the basis for a multitude of applications in environmental management and spatial planning. Hence, the geoland Core Service Land Cover (CSL) serves the geoland regional Observatories and a number of national level user organisations with harmonized, topical and geometric correct basic information on Land Cover

The geo-information database from the Core Service Land Cover will be used downstream within the regional Observatories by integrating the data into their specific applications and models. Public user organizations will use it as a sound basis for their own analysis. Application specific or local land cover mapping needs will be served by the regional observatories. Interoperability and coherence with CORINE Land Cover has been strictly observed. However, the CSL Land Cover database has been designed to easily plug in additional objects (thematic classes) and/or increase the minimum mapping unit, as needed.

CSL can be understood as well as a "stand alone" service for an "intermediate" geo-information service which can be easily adopted towards local / national specific requirements by many service partners, public agencies, NGOs. etc. in a late customization process. In this respect - based on current developments on European level - CSL is currently discussed as a basis for an improved CORINE Land Cover database.
